马克思于1982年获得诺贝尔文学奖，担任法语西班牙语文化交流委员会主席。 1982年，哥伦比亚地震，他回到了祖国。 1999年不幸患了淋巴癌，之后文学产量锐减。 2006年1月发表了书信。

马克思于1927年3月6日出生于哥伦比亚沿岸的小镇阿拉卡塔卡( aracataca )。 是长子，父亲当过邮递员、电报员和药剂师。 因为没能养育12个孩子，马克思小时候和祖父母一起住在一个大摇大摆的大房子里。 这深深地影响了他之后的创作生活。 祖母说她是他人生中最重要的人。
